Identifying Concerns

When the concern is identified as a result of our observing signs and indicators of abuse rather than resulting from a disclosure (someone telling us what has happened), we need to respond proportionately and in a timely manner. Here are some key principles for identifying and responding to concerns.

Analysis and clarity of understanding

  • Do we have a clear understanding of what we are worried about and why?
  • Do we understand the level of risk to the child and what their life is like?

Ensuring immediate safety

  • Is there any immediate action that we need to take to keep the child safe?
  • Have we recorded any action taken along with our concerns?

Recording and reporting to the DSL

  • Have we clearly documented the concerns?
  • Have we included all necessary information and evidence in the record?
  • Have we passed the information to the DSL?
