Why Do People Abuse?
Why Do People Abuse?
Behaviour is always a choice, there is no excuse for abuse.
Common excuses are below.

……it’s because they had an abusive childhood?
This is incorrect.
Assuming all abusers had a traumatic childhood indicates that all children who experience abuse are predestined to abuse in their adulthood. This is not the case, many children who live in a home where domestic abuse is a factor go on to have healthy relationships as adults. This gives hope to the children who are currently suffering. Their life is not mapped out for them to become like their abusers. Many children who experience domestic abuse want to create a safe home environment for their future family.
As the ACE’s video highlights, our early experiences can affect us and the way we behave in adulthood, however this is not the reason why people abuse. It is important to remember that our behaviour is always a choice.
….. it’s because they suffer with their mental health?
This is incorrect.
Many people who suffer with mental health disorders are able to have healthy relationships therefore, using mental health as a reason to abuse is an excuse.
……it’s because they drink alcohol or take drugs?
This is incorrect.
Many people are able to stay calm and non-violent when under the influence. Drugs and alcohol do not always result in abuse therefore, this is also an excuse.
The reason why people abuse, is due to a desire for power and control. Intimate terrorists use coercive control to have power and dominance over their victim. See lesson one for more detail.
